Details:  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Fred and Sadie Fowler Souther. Chester was a WWII Army Veteran and a retired employee of Glen Raven Mills after 37 years. He was preceded in death by a son: Chester Michael Souther; brothers: Charles, Carroll, Ted, Donald, John and Robert Souther; sisters: Virginia Mitchell and Geneva Bailey. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Hazel Hensley Souther; children: Karen Payne and husband, Bobby, Kathy Ingle and husband, J. C., Kevin Souther and wife, Diane, Kristie Hollifield and husband, Darrell, and Kim Souther all of Burnsville; 5 grandchildren: Mike and Lonny Payne, Terri Ingle-Krause, Amanda Hollifield and Jacob Souther and 2 great grandchildren: Colton Payne and Shayleigh Souther. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. David Garland will officiate. Burial will be in the McCracken Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

Pansy Grindstaff Willis

Details:  A native of Mitchell County she was a daughter of the late Squibb and Bunie Grindstaff. She was a member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Mountain Order of the Eastern Star Chapter # 29. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Wade Willis, three sisters; Lela Grindstaff, Mae Good and Bonnie Smoot and three brothers; Andrew, Mack and Everette Grindstaff.  Survivors include two daughters, Mary Sue Buchanan and husband David of Bakersville, and Betty Lou Norman and husband Bruce of Bakersville, two sons; Tommy Ray Willis and wife Reva of Bakersville and Ted L. Wills and wife Ruth also of Bakersville, and four sisters; Savannah Smith, Mattie Whitney, Alice Scarlette and Ethel Young. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.  Funeral services for Mrs. Willis will be conducted at 3:00 pm Saturday July 31, 2010 in the Snow Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Dean Honeycutt officiating. Interment will follow in the Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the service hour at the church.

Details: (Update) Born April 6, 1923 in Chicago, IL to Ludwick and Victoria Rdesinski Pawlowski, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Beavers and a sister, Lillian Latawiec. Helen worked in Yancey Hospital as a nurses aid for several years and will be remembered by many for her caring help. She was of Polish descent and was proud to be known as the Polish Lady she was. A devout Catholic, she was loved by many who knew her for her devotion to God. Surviving are a son Joe Beavers of Huntingdon, TN and a daughter, Vivian Alvarez of Burnsville; three grandchildren: Michelle Hall, Jeff Beavers and Jason Beavers; seven great grandchildren: Maleah Hulme, Sierra Trott, Christopher Hall, Rachael Beavers, Morgan Beavers, Maddie Beavers and Evan Beavers; two sisters: Evelyn Staskiewicz and Genevieve Zaworski of Chicago and numerous nieces and nephews of family in Chicago. A memorial service will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday, July 31, 2010 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Ava Jade Smith and Eden Calloway both of Spruce Pine and a grandson, Robert D. Biddix of Spruce Pine. A private service will be held.

Details: Shar was born in Orlando, Florida and had formerly lived in Newport News and Virginia Beach, Virginia before moving to Burnsville in 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Ruth Foley. Shar was known for her devotion to her many friends, her love of all animals and her liberal views for the less fortunate and oppressed. She is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 32 wonderful years, Bill Baker; her three pets: Kinsey, Lucky and Emmy Lou and her beautiful horse, Champaigne. Also left to cherish her memory and spirit are Linda Herman (her BFF for over 50 years); Linda’s family, four sisters, and her life long friends and extended family. Interment Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 31st at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Winter Garden, Florida. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, August 15th in the Burnsville Town Center from 3 until 5 p. m. Jeter Ray Parker

Details:  He was the son of Fornum and Julie Canipe Parker. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Jake, and Claude Parker, one sister, Ethel Parker Hoilman, and one nephew, Charles Parker Jr. (Sonny).  He worked at Glen Raven in Burnsville, NC, for 17 years and was a carpenter and farmer. He was a veteran of World War II, a Staff Sergeant in rank. He was a faithful member of Spring Creek Baptist Church and was a teacher and served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife, Zeda Hughes Parker of the home, one sister Maude Parker Forbes of Roan Mountain, TN, special sister and brother in law, Ethel and Farrell Ollis of Bakersville, NC, three nephews, Alvin Dean Ollis and wife Cynthia, Ernest Sparks (Buddy), and Sammy Parker, two nieces, Pat Parker and Betty Stambauch.  Funeral services will be held, July 25, 2010 at 3:00PM in the Spring Creek Baptist Church. Bob McCurry will be officiating the service. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Details:  A native of Mitchell County he was a son of Sylvia Crowder Fisher and the late Stokes Fisher. He worked as a Carpenter and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by two brothers; Clayton and Dennis Fisher, a sister, Brenda Fisher and a nephew, Jerry Fisher. In addition to his mother he is survived by two sons; Ricky Fisher and Bradley Fisher both of the home, four sisters; Mildred Pittman, Marie Sparks, Jean Fisher and Tammy Fisher all of Spruce Pine and two brothers; Morris “Pee Wee” Fisher of Spruce Pine and Glenn “Buddy” Fisher of Marion.  Funeral services for Mr. Fisher will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday July 24, 2010 in the Fairview Baptist Church with the Revs. Luther Carver and Darrin Waldroup officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Friday evening at the home of his mother at 186 Fisher Road, Spruce Pine.

Bonnie Sparks Byrd

Details:  She was the daughter of the late John and Minnie Green Sparks and a native of Mitchell County, NC. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of The Brethren at Harrell Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Byrd. She and Clyde were the original founders of the Bonnie and Clyde Drive In Restaurant in Loafers Glory, NC. She resided with her daughter (Carol) for the past two and a half years.  Survivors include her daughter Carol Byrd Bennett, and husband Paul, of Red Hill, NC, one sister, Edna Masters, of Erwin, TN, grandchildren, Mike Hopson, and wife Nancy, of Johnson City, TN, Dan Hopson and wife Tammy, of Red Hill, NC, David Bennett and wife Sarah, of Lynchburg, VA, Sarah Bennett Woody and husband Shannon, of Red Hill, NC, great grandchildren, Samuel and Annie Hopson, Linda and Ethan Hopson, Marcus Beach, Annie and Daniel Bennett, Caroline, Mary Beth and Zeb Woody.  She was preceded in death by her daughter Alice Hopson and husband Max several brothers, and sisters.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 12:00 Noon in Pleasant Grove Church of The Brethren (Harrell Hill), with Paul Bennett officiating. Details:  Born in Avery County she was a daughter of the late Linney and Della Grindstaff Hopson. She was a loving, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother; she also loved to be around people and giving to everyone and was a hard worker. She attended Gouges Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Poore Heaton and a granddaughter, Flisha Lawyer.  Survivors include her husband, Joe Poore of the home, three daughters; Pamela Thomas of Spruce Pine, Rita Smith of Spruce Pine and Audry Orr of Bakersville and a son; Mickey Poore of Marion. She is also survived by three brothers, two sisters, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Poore will be conducted at 7:00 pm Thursday July 22, 2010 in the Gouges Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Thomas, Mickey Poore and Evan Hopson officiating. Details:  He was a native of Geneva County, Alabama, and was the son of the late Titus and Eldora Ward Cullifer. He had worked as a Chaplain at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, TN, he was a graduate of Geneva High School in Geneva, AL, he was also a graduate of Slidel Bible Institute in Slidel, AL, where he obtained a Masters Degree in Theology. He was a master woodworker and an active member of Spring Creek Baptist Church.

Details:  A native of Mitchell County he was a son of Theresa Buchanan Gurley and the late Gary James Hoyle. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Correction and was a veteran of the US Army. He also was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his Paternal Grandfather, James Hoyle and his Maternal Grandfather, Cecil Buchanan.  In addition to his mother Theresa Gurley and husband Frank of Bakersville, he is survived by a son, Jacob Allen Hoyle of Bakersville, a brother, Matthew James Hoyle of Bakersville, Paternal Grandmother, Edna Hoyle of Spruce Pine and his Maternal Grandmother, Mildred Buchanan of Bakersville.  Funeral services for Mr. Hoyle will be conducted at 3:00 pm Friday July 23, 2010 in the Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Darrin Waldroup and Chris Rathbone officiating. Hattie Wilcox McCourry

Details: Born in Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Handy and Fairene Forbes Wilcox. She was the wife of Rev. Troy McCourry who passed away April 9, 2009. Hattie, along with her husband and son, owned and operated Troy’s Greenhouse and Variety for over 52 years. She was a loyal pastor’s wife during Troy’s 27 years at Southside FWB Church in Erwin, TN and 23 years at Pensacola FWB Church. Hattie was preceded in death by brothers and sister: Bruce, Ralph, Cellie, Alfred and Sam Wilcox. She will long be remembered for her loving, caring and generous nature.  Surviving are her son: Wade McCourry of the home; sisters and brothers: Janie Whitson and husband, Brooks, of Unicoi, TN, Claude Wilcox and wife, Patricia, and Bonnie Bowman and husband, Hugh, both of Kingsport, TN, Ronnie Wilcox and wife, Patty, of Mars Hill, and Jim Wilcox and wife, Wanda, of Unicoi, TN. Also surviving are her McCourry brothers and sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, and, a special friend and caregiver: Louise Honeycutt.  Funeral services will be held at 8PM Thursday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Bobby Revis, Frank Cable and Roger Whitson will officiate. Details: A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late James and Sarah Manassa Boone Jones. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Martha McMahan, Julia Hall, Mary Magdaline Harding and Ina Suddreth and brothers: Sam and Horace Jones. Edna was a life-long member of Pleasant Gap Baptist Church. She was a loving sister, aunt and faithful friend to all who knew her.  Survivors left to cherish her memory are her sisters: Viola Robinson of Green Mountain and Thula Sparks and husband, Gay, of Micaville; special caregiver: Janet Yarbrough and a host of nieces and nephews who she loved so very much.  Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Pastors Steve Grindstaff and Jerry Shelton will officiate. Ruth Jobe Rice

Details: A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Captain Isaac Tipton Jobe and Alice Evans Jobe and the wife of Carlie R. Rice who died in 1984. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Jess, Bill, and Carl Jobe. She was a graduate of Clearmont High School and returned there to teach for 43 years. Ruth attended Burnsville First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and in 1962, she started Volunteering at Asheville V.A. Medical Center where she served more than 10,000 hours. She was also a member of the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter 57 DAV Auxiliary. She was a former Board Member of the Yancey County Senior Center and delivered meals on wheels for several years. Surviving are a niece: Alice Jobe; nephews: Willie Jobe and wife, Willoree, and Kenny Jobe all of Burnsville and Gary Jobe and wife, Sandy, of Penland. Ruth was a special “Mam Maw” to Robbie, Richard, C.J., Paige and Josh Jobe of Burnsville, Leigh Jobe of Tennessee and Adam Jobe of Asheville.  Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Candler. Details: A native of Yancey County she was a daughter of the late Roy and Evie McIntosh Mathis and the wife of Jack Penland who died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son Lee Roy Penland, and brothers Junior Mathis and Ward Mathis.  Surviving are 3 daughters: Pauline Blankenship and husband Jerome, Ethel McPeters and husband Clifford, all of Burnsville, and Tammy Penland of Swannanoa; 3 sons: Jackie Penland, Ronnie Penland and Joey Penland, all of Swannanoa; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; 5 sisters: Mary Robinson of Burnsville, Marie Ferguson of Jonesborough, TN, Hannah Neighbors of Hamlet, Louise Young of Burnsville and Deborah Mathis of Asheville; 3 brothers: Edd Mathis of Hickory, Wayne Mathis of Jacksonville, NC and Ted Mathis of Asheville.  Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Details: A native of Yancey County she was a daughter of the late Melvin and Nora Honeycutt Ray and the wife of Adam Mitchell who died in 1992.  Surviving are 2 daughters: Carol Adkins and husband Ralph of Nebo and Joyce Ratcliffe and husband Roger of Newnan, GA; 2 grandsons: Eric Adkins and wife Tracey of Marion and Steve Ratcliffe and wife Natalivette of Grantville, GA; 3 great grandchildren: Meredith and Jackson Adkins and Luis Ratcliffe.  Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Monday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Billy Joe Bartlett

Details: A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Lee and Gladys Boone Bartlett. He was a U. S. Army Veteran and a current employee of NC Department of Corrections in Spruce Pine where he had been employed for the past 20 years. Bill was an avid horse lover and spent all his spare time enjoying his horses. Bill lived every day to its fullest. He was a member of Big Crabtree Baptist Church.  Surviving are his wife, Karen Willis Bartlett; a daughter: Leslie Bartlett Crowder and husband, Toby, of Burnsville, 2 sisters: Linda Carroway and husband, Dennis, of Burnsville and Brenda Earley and husband, Lee, of Spruce Pine; 2 step-sons: Travis McKinney of Orlando, FL and Tony McKinney of Spruce Pine; a step-daughter: Brandi Forbes and husband, David, of Spruce Pine; 2 grandchildren: Emilee and Katy Crowder of Burnsville; 2 step-grandchildren: Dawson and Breeounna Forbes of Spruce Pine; and, his father-in-law: Claude Willis of Spruce Pine.Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Toby Crowder will officiate. Burial will be in the Big Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The N. C. Department of Corrections will serve as honor guard.

Details:  A native of Mitchell County she was a daughter of the late Harley and Venie Carpenter Hall. She worked many years in the Harris High School Cafeteria and later retired from Ingles in Spruce Pine as a Deli Cook and she was a member of Berry Chapel Baptist Church. She loved Christmas parties for the children in her family and making Christmas candy to share with family and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Gerald McKinney who passed away in 1988, three brothers; Marshall, Lewis and Eugene Hall and two sisters; Augusta Mae Hall and Christine Styles.  Survivors include a son Richard McKinney and wife Beulah of Spruce Pine, two daughters; Evelyn English and husband Jerry and Alice Bryant and husband David all of Spruce Pine, two sisters Lucille Allen of Spruce Pine and Marcella Henson of Spruce Pine and her mother-in-law, Agnes McKinney of Spruce Pine. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.  Funeral services for Mrs. McKinney will be conducted at 2:00 pm Friday July 16, 2010 in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Grindstaff, Dallas Renfro, Fred Proctor and Don Stafford officiating. He was employed for over twenty years with the Charlotte Observer. In addition to his parents and wife; he was preceded in death by four brothers; Robert, Roy, Ray, and Charles Hollifield; a grandson; A.J. Hollifield and a special niece, Mary Jane Burleson.  Survivors include three sons; Bobby Hollifield and wife, Glenda of Spruce Pine; Freddie Hollifield and wife, Kay of Spruce Pine; and Keith Hollifield and wife, Gail of Burnsville; a daughter; Judy Cannon and husband, Glenn of Spruce Pine. Details: A native of Mitchell County, he was born July 24th, 1936 to the late H.A. and Mayme Ledford Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Hollifield. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church,where he served as a Deacon. He had also taught Sunday school classes. He had retired from Coats America after a 42 year career. He is survived by his wife, Betty Graybeal Jones; sons, Charles Ray Jones Jr. and wife Teresa of Spruce Pine, Richard Keith Jones and wife Sheila of Burnsville; a daughter, Janie Queen and husband Donald of Bakersville; grandsons, Bradley Jones and wife Dedra, Jacob Jones;granddaughters, Sarah Morrisey and husband Jamie, Ashley Mohr and husband Adam, and Samantha Jones; step grandsons, Dakota and Joseph Crain, Chris Hutchins; step granddaughters, Angie Webb and Miranda Nunnally, along with great grandchildren Caleb and Emma Morrissey and step great grandchildren Trinton and Gavin Nunnally, Ashur Webb and Aerith Webb. Charles enjoyed traveling and camping with family and friends. He loved both his family and church family and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends at Yancey Funeral Services in Burnsville from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Sunday, July 4th. Funeral Services will be held at Liberty Hill Baptist Church at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 5th. The Revs. B.G. McMahan and David Philbeck will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites being conducted by the Mitchell County Veterans Memorial Team. Details: She was the daughter of the late George and Thula Garland and the wife of 61 years to Samuel Alonzo Rowe who died in 2008. Katherine was a retired seamstress who loved to crotchet, make dolls and she loved to travel. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashli Erin Boyd and son in law, Jerry Edward Boyd.
Katherine is survived by three daughters, Sheila Diane Bokath and husband Gary of Stanwood, WA, Shirley Ann Bokath and husband Douglas of Azusa, CA and Patricia Ann Boyd of Bakersville; grandchildren, Stephanie Denise Bokath, Shannon Michelle Bokath, Stacey Lynn Bokath, Mark James Bokath, Kimberly Ann Bokath and Kelsee Rochelle Boyd; great grandchildren, Braden Evan Bokath and Anthony Douglas Bokath-Piloto. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on July 11, 2010 at 5:00pm in the Lambsfold Farms Cemetery located in Columbus, NC. The Rev. David Rowe will officiate.

Details: A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Doshia Silvers Robinson. She was the wife of the late James Marsh. A daughter, Shirley Marsh, and a great grandson, Mark McMahan, preceded her in death. Irene was a member of Micaville Presbyterian Church. She retired from the Yancey County School system as Manager of Micaville Elementary Lunchroom.  Surviving are 4 children: Bobby Marsh, Janice Grove, Jim Marsh and wife, Sue, all of Micaville, and Charlene Ray and husband, Tommy, of Old Fort; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and, a great, great granddaughter.  Funeral services will be held at 7PM Friday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11AM Saturday in Holcombe Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Details: A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Clausel and Roxie Edney Allen, and the husband of Irene Anglin Allen who died in 2000. They had been married for 60 years. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter: Mabel Irene; brothers: Jeter, Clarence, Fred and Zenus Allen; and, sisters: Vaughtie Wheeler, Blanche Metcalf, Vergie Hampton, Vivian Gardner, Lillie Dodd and Annie Foster. Paul attended Bakers Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher and singing leader. Paul had a family quartet “The Allen Family”, who sang together over 50 years. He loved his Lord, family, church and had a host of friends.  Surviving are his son: Preston Allen and wife, Phyllis; daughter: Nina Hughes and husband, Johnny all of Burnsville; grandchildren: Jeffrey, Anthony, Pam and Tami; great grandchildren: Whitley, Chelsea, Nick, Andrea, Juliana and Finley; two step great grandchildren: Jason and Sam; and three great, great step grandchildren: Kilee, Cloey, and Cane.  Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday in Bakers Creek Baptist Church. Details: A native of Avery County, he was a son of Ruth Smith Aldridge of Newland and the late Carl Aldridge, who passed away in 1966. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Carl Micheal Aldridge, who passed away in 2000. Tom was a member of First Baptist of Crossnore, where he taught the Young Married Couples Class along with his wife for 10 years. He owned and operated Tom C. Aldridge,Trucking,Inc, where he was known as “Lockwasher” and “Baby Whale”. He was a truck driver for over 55 years, who was known by many and loved by all.  After retirement, hewas employed with the Avery County Transport Authority for 7 years. Surviving in addition to his mother, Ruth Smith Aldridge, is his loving wife of 38 years, Doris Johnson Aldridge; daughter, Alesia Calloway and husband, Steve, of Buck Hill; son, Doyle Hutcheson and wife, Pamela, of North Pole, Alaska; three brothers: Mike Aldridge and wife, Martha, of Newland, Garry Aldridge and wife, Alicia, of Blowing Rock and Dennis Aldridge and wife, Maria, of Newland; three grandchildren: Amber Dawn Calloway, Ryan Doyle Hutcheson and Christopher Alan Hutcheson; special friends Chuck and Phyllis Walker. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of sixty-four years; Avery Buchanan; two sons; David Buchanan and wife, Judy of Spruce Pine and Avery Buchanan, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Nebo; one daughter; Margie Ingram and husband, George of Newland; five sisters; Kathleen Buchanan and Irene Fisher of Spruce Pine; Anna Lee Ledford of Tennessee; Jennie V. Frank worked for over 32 years at Henredon, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and an avid football fan. Surviving is a daughter, Darlene Burleson and a son, Daniel Burleson, both of Spruce Pine; two sisters: Faye Edwards and husband, Charles, and Emma Buxton, all of Spruce Pine; four brothers: Darrell Burleson of Bakersville, Dorman Burleson of Conway SC, Ray Burleson and wife, Cathe, of Arden, and Joe Burleson and wife, Jean, of Conway SC; two beautiful granddaughters: Alyssa and Katelynn Angel. He was a gifted guitar player, gospel singer, and a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church.  Survivors include his wife, Joyce Jones Pitman of the home; one son, Thomas Wayne Pitman and wife Sheila of Bakersville; two daughters, Cheryl Buchanan and husband Eddie of Bakersville, and Diana Hughes and husband Robert of Bakersville; five grandsons, Shane Hughes, Adam Hughes, Michael Buchanan, Anthony Pitman, and Brandon Pitman; a granddaughter, Sarah Pitman; one brother, Lawrence Pitman; and two sisters, Edith Bumgardner and Jean Boyd; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00PM, Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the Cane Creek Baptist Church with Reverends Lonnie McClellan and Ronnie Gouge officiating. Robert was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and member of North Bend Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as Treasurer until his health declined.  Surviving are 2 sons: Steve Whitson and wife, Billie Jean, of Burnsville and David Whitson and wife, Saundra, of Hudson, NC; 2 daughters: Debra Deyton and husband, Rodney, and Lisa Barker and husband, Danny, all of Bristol, TN; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 sisters: Ruby Letterman and Rita Honeycutt of Burnsville, Ruth Mosley of Perry Hall, MD and Rosetta Walsh of Elizabethton, TN; and, 3 brothers: Ralph Whitson of Ft. Details: Son of the late Pearl Lena and Homer Albert Robinson, he was born June 6, 1940 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. In addition to his mother and father he was preceded in death by a brother Billy Ray Robinson of Morganton, North Carolina.  Gene is survived by his son Chris and daughter-in-law Charlene Starr of Hillsborough, NC; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Hannah, Stephen, Miranda, and Rachelle; a brother Jimmy Robinson of Falls Church, VA, two sisters, Glenda Lowery of Spruce Pine, NC, and Frances Baker of Lebanon, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.  Gene graduated from Bowman High School in Bakersville, NC. Afterward he attended Blanton Business College in Asheville, NC before relocating to Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era at Fort Belvoir, VA. After leaving the military he lived in Arlington, VA where he worked for the Washington Gas Company, and Casio and Wolf Printing Company before returning to North Carolina. He was employed by Brad Ragan in Spruce Pine, N.C. He was a member of Silver Chapel Baptist Church in Bandana, N.C. Gene was a successful soccer coach and mentor to many youth by imparting his knowledge of teamwork and cooperation. He enjoyed country music, was an avid Washington Redskin fan, liked NASCAR Racing and was a devoted Mitchell High Mountaineer fan. His companion for many years was his beloved dog, Spotty. She was Gene’s traveling buddy; she loved to ride in his van, and whenever you saw Gene you saw Spotty. Gene was a brother, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by all. Funeral services for Mr. Robinson will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday June 25, 2010 at the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel with Chris Starr speaking. Interment will be in the Silver Chapel Cemetery. Burbage Henry Buchanan

Details: Burbage was the son of Steven Green and Callie Monway Buchanan.  He was preceded in passing by wife Gladys Buchanan, in 1981, and later by Wilma Rose Buchanan, in 2009; a brother, Kenneth Buchanan, sister Eva Snyder Stamey, and sister Elizabeth Sisk.  He is survived by his daughter Joyce Buchanan Orndoff and husband, G. Michael Orndoff of Spruce Pine, two grandchildren, Gregory M. Orndoff of Bakersville, Jason Orndoff and wife Nikki, and great-grandson Graham Henry Orndoff, a namesake. Jason and family live in Hickory.  Burbage is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Dessie Callahan, by a special nephew Bruce Ward who visited him frequently at Brian Center, and several other nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.  Burbage served honorably in the United States Navy during WWII and also served numerous veterans and their families as a Veteran's Service Officer, based in Mitchell County, for 22 years until retirement. People frequently visited Burbage in his room at the Brian Center and expressed how much they appreciated his help to them or a member of their family with veterans services. The family thanks all those who expressed those sentiments.  Burbage was also a master carpenter, rockhound, farmer, real estate broker, salesman for Amway and Golden Pride products, and other occupations and hobbies during his life. He was one of the most positive individuals one will ever meet; he kept a good attitude even during his last years when his health was declining and he could no longer attend his church or engage in all the other activities he had enjoyed so much.  During his last years, Burbage resided at Brian Center where he was known by all as helping other residents and participating in any church services and other activities. He particularly loved those who came to sing for the residents.  He served as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather for his entire time with us, and will be greatly missed.  Burbage attended Cane Creek Freewill Baptist Church until he was unable to drive. He served as an adult men's Sunday school teacher until he could no longer come to church.  Visitation will be held from 6:30 until 7:30PM on June 25, 2010, at the Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville, NC, and a funeral service will follow from 7:30-8:30PM with the Rev. Don Stafford officiating. Burbage will be laid to rest in Cane Creek Cemetery #2 on June 26, 2010 with full military honors being provided by the North Carolina Honor Guard.

Details: Born in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Nellie Snyder McBee of Spruce Pine. Pearl was a graduate of Asheville Normal Teachers College and a graduate of U.N.C. Greensboro with a master’s degree in early childhood education and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She taught school for thirty years in the Charlotte and Hickory school systems. She enjoyed reading and music and loved to travel and did so until she became ill. She was a member of the Myers Park Baptist Church.  Left to cherish her memories are three sisters; Marjorie Pittman and Faye McBee both of Spruce Pine and Lores Whitaker of Black Mountain. He was retired from Mitchell County Schools after 30 years of service and served as Principle for 19 years. Details:    Mr. Miller was a native of Relief, North Carolina and had lived in Johnson City most of his life . He was a son of the late Clayton and Polly Miller. Mr. Miller was a faithful Christian who loved to attend church and have fellowship with his church family, sing hymns and profess his love for the Lord. He was a member of the Rich Acres Free Will Baptist Church. As a young man Mr. Miller was employed by Harris Manufacturing and
retired from ETSU Dental Hygeine Department. After retirement he worked as Volunteer Traffic Control with the Johnson City Police Dept. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Miller had entertained many students and faculty members at ETSU with his wonderful sense of humor. He is preceded in death by: his parents; his wife of forty-eight years, Mary Lee McCurry Miller in 1998; two brothers, Earl Miller and Loy Miller; and one sister Bertha Silver. Survivors include: one daughter, Teresa Maden of Jonesborough; two brothers, Gene and his wife Sandy Miller, and Tony and his wife Linda Miller, all of Burnsville, NC; two sisters, Julie Fortner of North Carolina and Vergie Hyder of Michigan; two grandchildren, Whitney and Spencer Maden of Jonesborough; a special friend, Gracie Davis of Johnson City. Details:    Shelba was born in Wing, NC on March 2, 1937. She was the first of four children born to Jack Huskins and Lessie Young. She attended Bowman High School and helped her mother take care of her younger siblings. She worked at Ellen Knitting Mills in Spruce Pine, Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir, Henredon in Spruce Pine and after retirement in 2002, she worked part time at Spruce Pine Hospital where she enjoyed the company of the patients as she kept their environment clean and inviting. Her life was a tapestry woven of joy and sadness. She relished cooking for her family, gardening, bluegrass music, her (and all) animals, and her three sons and grandchildren. She buried two of her sons, Bobby Jack Grindstaff and Jerry Douglas Grindstaff, and one grandson, Joey Grindstaff. She lived for the last five years of her life with her beloved younger sister, Nola Anne, in South Carolina. She is survived by her son, Joe Ray Grindstaff, sister, Nola Anne Huskins DeWitt, brothers, Jack Huskins Jr, Lee Huskins, grandchildren Brandy Tollie, Derek Woody and Timmie Autry, and by great-grandchildren Dylan Grindstaff, and Brooke, & Savannah Tollie.  Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday June 10, 2010 in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine, with visitation at 11:00 am. Chris Rathbone will conduct the service. Interment will be in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour in the funeral home chapel.  Gerald D. Grindstaff is survived by a son; Jerry Grindstaff of Spruce Pine; a daughter; Dana Grindstaff of Spruce Pine; two grandsons; Josh Grindstaff and Junior Grindstaff both of Spruce Pine; and a brother; Harve Grindstaff of Bakersville.
