Yancey County Man Faces Extortion
Charges and Federal Parole Violations
Yancey County Sheriff Deputies took Michael Allen Cheatham 46, of
White Oak Creek Road, Burnsville, North Carolina into custody after
a criminal investigation conducted by Lt. Thomas Farmer and Det.
John D. Thomas of the Yancey County Sheriff's Department revealed
that Cheatham on three separate occasions in August 2009 did
telephone a court appointed attorney working on his behalf in regard
to an estate issue pending in Yancey County and threaten to harm the
attorney and members of his family. Cheatham is also alleged to have
threatened to kill any and all pets owned by his attorney if the
amount of time and money owed on the fee application submitted to
the Yancey County Clerk of Court was not adjusted to reflect a lower
rate.
Lt. Thomas L. Farmer of the Yancey County Sheriff's Department
confirmed that Michael Allen Cheatham telephoned Attorney Jason Gast
of Asheville, North Carolina on three separate occasion in August
2009 and left threatening messages on his voice mail. Lt. Farmer
stated the content of the messages was extremely threatening,
disturbing and illegal.
According to Farmer, Cheatham was not in agreement with the amount
of time and money charged to the court in a civil matter Gast had
been appointed to resolve in regard to the Estate of Michael
Cheatham's parents that was not resolved.
Lt. Farmer stated that Michael Cheatham and his brother Darren
Cheatham who have both been in and out of incarceration since the
death of their parents refused to cooperate with the Yancey County
Clerk of Court to settle the estate and Gast was appointed to
resolve the matter.
Cheatham, who was on parole at the time of this offense was taken to
the Buncombe County Jail where he was processed for the Extortion
offenses received in Ashevile,N.C. by Attorney Gast.
Cheatham remains in the Buncombe County Jail under a $ 250.000.00
secured bond and will appear in Buncombe County District Court on
October 23, 2009.

Greenmountain Man No Stranger
To Law Enforcement
Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested Randall Dale Chandler
43, of 894 Hill Road, Greenmountain, North Carolina and charged him
with two counts of Possessing Schedule II Controlled Substances, two
counts of Possessing Controlled Substances Inside Improper Concealed
Containers and one count of Possessing Drug Paraphernalia. Chandler
was taken before a Yancey County Magistrate and released from
custody after posting a $ 1,500.00 secured bond. Chandler is
scheduled to appear in Yancey County District Court on October 13,
2009. Lt. Thomas L. Farmer of the Yancey County Sheriff's Department
confirmed that at the time of the arrest Chandler was found to be in
possession of several drug paraphernalia in addition to other items
he was charged with possessing. The additional seized items will
submitted to the S.B.I. Western Laboratory in Asheville, North
Carolina for analysis. Farmer stated that additional charges against
Chandler are likely as it is suspected that illegal controlled
substances are present inside many of the submitted items of
paraphernalia. Lt. Farmer stated that the arrest was made after
Deputies with the Sheriff's Department and Probation Officers
conducted a search of the Chandler residence as he was suspected to
be in possession of illegal controlled substances
On August 17, 2009 Chandler was convicted in Yancey County Superior
Court for Possessing Methamphetamine and placed on Intensive
Probation. If convicted of this latest offense Chandler is likely to
face a prison sentence.
In other cases :
Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested Brian Ray Conley 32, of
470 Champ Ray Road, Burnsville, North Carolina and charged him with
one count of Felonious Manufacturing Marijuana, one count of
Possessing Marijuana, one count of Possessing Hydrocodone Without A
Prescription and one count of Possessing Drug Paraphernalia. Conley
was taken before a Yancey County Magistrate and released from
custody after posting a $ 3,000.00 secured bond. Conley is scheduled
to appear in Yancey County District Court on October 13, 2009.

Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested Joni Leann Godfrey 27,
of Rabbit Hop Lane, Burnsville, North Carolina and charged her with
one count of Possessing Marijuana, one count of Possessing Drug
Paraphernalia and one count of Illegal Possession of Hydrocodone, A
Schedule II Controlled Substance. Godfrey was taken before a Yancey
County Magistrate and released from custody in lieu of posting a $
500.00 bond. Godfrey is scheduled to appear in Yancey County
District Court on October 13, 2009.

Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested Melanie Lynn Street 23,
of 197 North, Greenmountain, North Carolina and charged her with two
counts of Possessing Schedule II Controlled Substances, to wit:
Methadone and Percocet, two counts of Prescription Labeling
Violations and one count of Possessing Drug Paraphernalia. Street
was taken before a Yancey County Magistrate and released from
custody after posting a $ 1,500.00 secured bond. Street is scheduled
to appear in Yancey County District Court on October 13, 2009.

Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested Linda Gail McCurry 48,
of 324 Pensacola Road, Burnsville, North Carolina and charged her
with one count of Possessing Methamphetamine. McCurry was taken
before a Yancey County Magistrate and released from custody after
posting a $ 3,000.00 secured bond. McCurry is scheduled to appear in
Yancey County District Court on October 13, 2009.

Yancey County Sheriff Deputies have arrested David Jay Henson 30, of
352 Bowditch Street, Burnsville, North Carolina and charged him with
one count of Felonious Breaking & Entering, one count of Felonious
Larceny and one count of Felonious Possession of Stolen Property.
Henson was taken before a Yancey County Magistrate and served with
warrants alleging that on or about September 11, 2009 he unlawfully
entered the residence of Olena Dellinger Hicks located at 620 Blue
Rock Road for the purpose of stealing personal property. Henson
remains in the Yancey County Jail under a $ 9,000.00 secured bond
and is scheduled to appear in Yancey County District Court on
October 13, 2009.
